World Health Organization


In April 1945, a conference was held in San-Francisco, in which Brazil and China proposed that an international health organization should be established. So, World health organization formally came into existence on 7th April in 1948.





Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesis is the present Director-General of WHO, who was appointed on 1st July 2017. The country of nationality of Tedros Adhanom is Ethiopia.









Due to this, the World health day is being celebrated on 7th April every year.





Every year on 7th April a specific aspect of public health is chosen for that year. For example, in 2015 it was The theme was "Food Safety", In 2016 it was "Diabetes" and in 2017 it was "Depression". The theme for 2018 is " Health for all", for 2019 is "Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere".





The theme for 2020 is" Support Nurses and Midwives". It is the context of the pandemic situation the world is facing i.e. Coronavirus (COVID-19).





The headquarter of WHO is in Geneva, Switzerland.





Objective of WHO





The objective of WHO is the attainment of the highest level of health by all people. WHO is the part of the UN but not sub-ordinate.





It has its own constitution and own governing body and budget.









Functions of WHO





The major works of the World Health Organization are prevention & control of specific diseases, development of health services, Improvement of family health and improvement of environmental health.





The other major works of WHO is the maintenance of health statistics, promotion of biomedical research, maintenance of health literature & information and cooperation with other global organization.





UN works closely with WHO for a survey like the Human Development Index(HDI) and the World Happiness Report.









Structure of WHO





WHO mainly has three organs:





1.World Health Assembly - It is the supreme governing body. It is also called " Health Parliament".





2. Executive Board - It consists of 34 members of which one third are renewed annually. It gives effect to decisions & policies of assembly. It can also take actions in an emergency.





3. The Secretariat - The Secretariat is headed by Director-General. It provides technical and managerial support to members.









The headquarter of the South-east Asia region is in New Delhi.
